If you follow me on Instagram then you might’ve noticed that I’ve been super busy for the past few days. I had tons of deadlines to meet at my regular job and with the blog, and I also had to attend a few events in between. One of the major events that I attended was the 2018 Black Girls Rock Awards.
This was my first time attending this show and it was awesome! In case you’re not familiar with the Black Girls Rock movement, let me give you a little backstory on it.
Black Girls Rock originally began as a non-profit youth empowerment and mentoring organization established to promote the arts for young women of color, as well as to encourage dialogue and analysis of the ways women of color are portrayed in the media. The founder, Beverly Bond, expanded it to so many different levels and branches over the years, and one of those branches became The Black Girls Rock Awards. The awards honors and promotes Black women in different fields involving music, entertainment, medicine, entrepreneurship and visionary aspects; the categorized awards include “The ‘Rock Star’ Award,” “Social Humanitarian,” “Who Got Next?,” “Living Legend,” “Shot Caller,” “Trailblazer,” “Motivator,” “Young, Gifted & Black,” “Star Power,” and “Visionary.” The program also features musical performances by female recording artists in the R&B and Soul music genres.
The show was pre-recorded and will air on BET on September 9th, 2018 at 8pm. To be honest, pre-recorded events made for television are not my favorite events to attend because they make you work extremely hard if you’re an audience member. They do scenes over, and they make you clap louder and louder each time. By the the end of the event you’re guaranteed to need a nap or two. The good part about this is you really feel like you’re a major part of the show, and you really are. Without our participation as an audience, the show would look plain and boring.
So anyway, the show was great! It was held in New Jersey at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center in Newark. It was hosted by Queen Latifah, and this year’s honorees were: Mary J Blige, Lena Waithe, Naomi Campbell, Janet Jackson, Tarana Burke, and Judith Jamison. Everyone showed up and showed out. It was very inspiring to witness so many women who look like me and come from similar backgrounds, being honored and recognized for the hard work they dedicate to their careers. The all gave great speeches, and I left feeling like I want to always give my best to my projects. When you’re a creative person it sometimes feels like you’re working hard for no reason, but these women are proof that it all gets greater later. 🙂
I wore this beautiful pantsuit from Missguided. I actually had this outfit for a minute, but I had been saving it for the right event. I knew that I would be working at the awards show, so I wanted to keep it sexy and comfortable without doing too much. This outfit gave me exactly what I was going for.
And guess what?! Missguided is currently having a 50% off sale right now! Click here to shop! I guarantee you will not be disappointed.
Be sure to watch the 2018 Black Girls Rock Awards when it airs!
